Several students in Nampa School District’s Culinary Arts program mentored young chefs in the St. Luke’s FitOne Expo last week at the Boise Centre.

Five students selected by Culinary Arts Chef Instructor Debra Guinn — Abby Maughan (Skyview High), Aileen McDaid (Columbia High), Julie Campbell (Columbia High), Nathanael Laird (Nampa High), and Christopher Allen (Columbia High) — worked with six 10- to 12-year-olds, showing them how to prepare, make and plate food made from scratch.

Two teams of three kids each received matching shirts, a team name, a box of food, and a mystery ingredient. The Nampa students and the kids had to come up with entrée and dessert recipes on the spot using the mystery ingredient — an avocado. The winning team (Team Unicorns) received certificates and a free “In the Wild” cookbook.

The event was part of St. Luke’s YEAH (Youth Engaged in Activities for Health) program.
