Debra GuinnCulinary Arts Instructor Debra Guinn was named Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Career Technical Educators of Idaho (CTEI) at an event held recently at the Basque Center of Boise. This statewide award recognizes the finest career and technical teachers at the middle and secondary school level who have demonstrated innovation in the classroom, commitment to their students and dedication to the improvement of CTE in their institutions and communities.

As the Idaho state winner, Guinn’s nomination will now be forwarded to the regional level and, if successful, she will be considered for the national Association of CTE award.

“Debra loves her job, she loves the work it entails and most importantly she loves her students,” former colleague Amy Christoffersen wrote in a letter of recommendation. Christoffersen said that when they worked together, Guinn “had her students loving her classes, accomplishing projects they never imagined they could ever do. She always had so much enthusiasm, love and care for each student.”

Clay Long, assistant director of the district’s Career and Technical Education program, is impressed by Guinn’s can-do attitude and ability to think outside the box. He also commented on her relationships outside the classroom. “Over the past two years, Debra has developed strong partnerships with local and national companies who see the value of what she is doing for students and actively participating with in-kind and cash donations to support the program and students,” he wrote.

Guinn currently is an advisor for FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) and SkillsUSA, and has been with the Nampa School District for five years. “She has been instrumental in the transformation of the culinary arts program to where it is today,” Long said.
