The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) has named Jeffrey Stoppenhagen the 2017-2018 Idaho Educator of the Year. He is the speech and debate teacher and coach at Columbia High School and East Valley Middle School. As a state winner, Stoppenhagen also will be considered for the 2017-2018 National Educator of the Year Award, to be announced in March.

Stoppenhagen was selected from more than 5,000 NSDA members across the country as the Idaho Educator of the Year. The award cited his “unwavering commitment to speech and debate education,” noting that his “passion for speech and debate has enhanced the quality of education in Idaho and beyond.”

“It is an honor to be chosen as Idaho Educator of the Year by the NSDA,” Stoppenhagen said. “Being part of an organization that provides such great support for teachers, coaches and students involved in competitive speech and debate means I know I have the resources and tools I need to help my students succeed in the classroom and competition.”

To be nominated for the award, educators must coach and teach speech and debate, have a minimum of five years of experience in the classroom, demonstrate broad contributions to the field of education, provide support and mentorship to the speech and debate community, and model the established NSDA Coach Code of Ethics.
