South Students Head Effort to Be the Change

When the nationwide “Be the Change” challenge was announced, South Middle School students Addyson Fleenor and Jordyn Horak knew what they wanted to do. Teaming up with Mrs. Rene Homer, leader of South’s Hawk-helpers student leadership group, they created a plan to benefit Because International, a Nampa-based entity that supplies shoes that will adjust to fit the growing feet of children in poverty-stricken areas.

Dr. Shaun Christensen of Middle Creek Dental understands that helping lift kids out of poverty can be as simple as investing in a shoe that protects and shields feet from disease. He recently presented students Addyson and Jordyn with a donation covering the cost of 10 pairs of shoes.

In addition, South students have donated enough money to fund 45 more pairs of shoes via fundraisers including hat days, where students pay to wear hats, and placing coins in Kindness jars located throughout the school. The students’ goal is to supply 100 pairs of Shoes that Grow for those in need.

The Hawk-helpers are the next generation of community leaders. Together, they feel they can alter the world around them not just locally, but also worldwide.
